I Think I'll Go to Austin!

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Have you ever heard the song Boston by Augustana?

Well if you haven't, the chorus starts off with 'I think I'll go to Boston..' Ever since I visited Austin, Texas again, my version is 'I think I'll go to Austin..'

Laugh all you want, but how could you resist singing an ode to a place that looks so unreal and full of beauty?

I love cities.

I love the country too, but cities are a world of their own. I don't quite know how to explain it, but the city is a magical thing. You can pass thousands of people a day, and you may never see one of those people again, or you may see your future husband or best friend in the crowd and not know it. It's weird and cool at the same time.

Throughout my whole visit, it was sunny and warm out. Apparently Austin has on average 300 days of sunshine a year, and I don't doubt that number at all. It was so summery feeling!

I don't know if you can tell, but I love the Texas Capitol Building. The building itself is bigger than our Nation's Capitol, so that is pretty noteworthy, but all facts aside, it's just a lovely building.

It couldn't have been a more perfect day to visit the capitol and the surrounding streets. Have you ever seen a bluer sky and greener grass? I was in love with those puffy white clouds. Looking back at the pictures, it looks so unreal.

One of the best parts of the city (besides the important buildings like the capitol) is walking the streets and seeing all the little shops.

As you walk away from the capitol, you pass big name brand shops and small local shops. I suppose that contributes to the whole 'Keep Austin Weird' saying.

A cool (and slightly odd) thing about Austin is how the crowded and isolated sections of the city seem to almost merge.

Once you pass the capitol and the Governor's Mansion (that's the house above), there are entrances to a nature trail by a lake.

Just as quickly as you arrived into the city, you are suddenly in an isolated area full of trees, water, and well, nature.

We walked the nature trail a few miles and ended up at a Farmer's Market. It was the perfect way to end a long walk and our trip in Austin.

Have you gone on vacation  yet?

  2. I love Austin! We went there several times while we lived in College Station. It such an outdoorsy city. There's a huge bike/running path around Lady Bird Lake that's really nice and Barton Springs Pool is a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. Plus, that is where the original Whole Foods started so the one there is enormous! I love it. :)

  3. I think I've been to Austin, but it has been quite some time! Seeing this really makes me want to go back!
I agree that there's something magical about cities. I've always considered myself a country girl, but every time I visit a city, I just LOVE it! I'm not sure I would want to live in one, but they're amazing to visit. :) I especially love Chicago, London, Helsinki, and Copenhagen. I was only in New York City for about half a day, but I really want to go back and explore more! I loved the part I did see.
So glad you had such a good time!

    1. I have one set of grandparents that lives out in the country, and every time I visit I think that I could deal with staying in the country forever. That is, until I visit the city! We did a whirlwind New York trip a few years back, and I've come to the conclusion that you could live in that city for 6 lifetimes and never see it all! I love it!

    1. It was really great weather! At some points it was a little hot, but that's typically what you can expect with Texas!

Going to Broadway shows seems so fun! When I was in New York, we were there right when Mama Mia finished, so there was no chance of catching a show! Something for the Bucket List though!
