A Berry Fun Summer Afternoon!

Saturday, August 03, 2013

I lied converted.

The sun shining behind me.

A juicy blueberry in my hand.

My life could've been a movie the moment I gave my loyalty to blueberries. (A sad, ridiculously cheesy movie revolving around food but a movie nonetheless.)

I gave my loyalty to blueberries on a sunny Monday at my Great-Grandmother's house.

She had enough blueberries on her bushes to feed a small country. Or Rhode Island at least.

Fully equipped with Ziploc bags, my family piled into our car and drove to eastern North Carolina to take advantage of the plethora of blueberries.

An afternoon of fun and lots of berry eating picking was about to commence.

There's something magical about picking your own food. Especially when you're picking fresh, big, juicy blueberries.

I know this is ridiculous, but I swear that hand-picked fruit tastes at least 10X better than store bought fruit.

It's just a fact.

You may not believe this, but picking blueberries kind of hard.

You go into the whole ordeal thinking you'll leave with 5 1-gallon bags stuffed full of blueberries within the hour.

Then you realize that just picking a handful takes time.

But, since it was summer vacation, I had all the time in the world.

Even though it was hard work, I had my heart set on 5 gallons of blueberries.

Just imagine the amount of pies you could make with that many blueberries.

My mantra quickly became: 'Do it for the pie, do it for the pie, do it for the pie.'

And believe me, we did it for the pie.

Hand-picked blueberries met a homemade pie that evening. It's the perfect and only way to reward yourself after a long day of picking!

(P.S. I managed to write down my Grandma's ancient Blueberry Pie recipe to show you guys in my first food post in nearly 1.5 months! I'm just a little overexcited! I'll post it sometime this week)

Have you ever picked blueberries before?
What's your favorite type of pie?
Which tastes better hand-picked or store-bought foods?

  4. Oh man, I haven't been blueberry picking in forever! But you better believe that those little gems taste 100x times better straight from the bush than they do in the stores. I'm thinking it might be too late to go berry picking around here, but I'm REALLY hoping to get some apple picking done this fall. And while I have to say that I'm not the hugest fan of pie, your grandma's blueberry one is seriously making me hungry...

    1. It's so relaxing and you leave with tons of berries! I wrote in the post that it took a while to pick them, but I didn't mention that I ate probably half a gallon. I'm quite sneaky. I've actually never picked apples (that are ripe) straight from the tree. That sounds so fallish and fun! I'm not a pie person either. I've never even liked blueberry pie, but this time I loved it! Go figure! Homegrown berries must've made the difference!

    1. I like them better in smoothies and other things or just plain. They can be really too sweet at times! I have the same problem with raspberries sometimes, so I don't think it's weird!

I'm so glad you had a good time girl! Unfortunately I haven't done any berry picking this summer, but I'll probably get to do some blackberry picking when I get to school this fall!
That pie is absolutely gorgeous. My all-time favorite pie is my mom's chocolate cream pie, but during summer, my dad's fresh blueberry pie is the best. I go back to school in just over two weeks, so he better get on making one haha ;)

    1. I seriously wish we could've taken some cheesy blogger field trip and picked blueberries. There were plenty to go around and the recipes that would result from that would be insane. I wish I could've done more berry picking, but I'll take what I can get. Blackberry picking is something I've never done. It's something that I really want to do one day, so blog about it if you go picking :) I've never had chocolate pie either. I've never been a pie person, so I should probably go outside of my comfort zone and try pies like chocolate cream pie that sound sooo good! I go back to school in a week, so I better get going on making a pie too! :)
