Check That Off My Bucket List: Running in a Hurricane!

Friday, September 27, 2013

Last Monday, South Texas had the closest thing it will ever have to a snow day: We had a hurricane day.

We were notified that all city schools would be closed on Monday, so I decided to turn my homework-filled Sunday night into a movie marathon.

That was until I remembered 6 AM cross country practice.

It would surely be cancelled because a hurricane was coming, righttt?

Um, wrong.

Since the hurricane wouldn't be bad until mid-afternoon and evening, my coach figured we could still get a quick run in.

At first I really didn't feel like waking up for morning practice, but my morning run is usually one of the better parts of my day, and I would get some crazy bragging rights after running in a hurricane, so I decided to set my alarm.

I forced myself to drive to school for 6 AM practice. Apparently only a few other people were crazy enough to attend, so we decided to go for a team run.

After a quick 4 mile run in a torrential downpour, we decided a team photo shoot was necessary because we needed proof that we actually ran during the hurricane.

The pictures were all fairly blurry, but let's just pretend that was because of very fast winds. (and not my coach's unsteady hand!)

I'm not even sure what's in that box, but apparently taking a picture with it was vital at the time.

Remember when I said I was a Pluviophile in this post? I think I still am, but I've decided I'm an 'Indoor Pluviphile'.

After running during a hurricane I've decided that running in the rain is nice, but I prefer listening to it inside with banana bread baking in my oven. But that being said, I can now check 'run in a hurricane' off my bucket list, and I think that's pretty darn cool.

Do you like running in the rain? I think I do. I'm not sure I would go for another 4 miles in a hurricane, but as long as a warm shower awaits me, I like running in the rain. That being said, I loved the cross country meet I went to last Saturday too. It was the perfect weather. Sunny with big blue skies! Maybe I'm a fan of running in most weather!

What's something crazy you've done? I ran in a hurricane. You've got to be pretty crazy to do that.

  1. I ran in rain that was as bad as a shower - but nothing close to a hurricane! Major bragging rights to you ;)

  2. Love your photoshoot you guys look so happy to be running in the rain which makes me smile!! I've run in the rain before and it makes me feel hardcore :)

  3. Wow now that is motivation! I once ran in the rain and extreme wind conditions (by accident) and nearly got blown over onto the road, it still traumatizes me to this day. So, although I love rain, I much prefer being indoors looking out at it :)

  4. Oh my gosh that is nuts!! I have ran in the rain before but nothing that insane. Although I did play a soccer tournament once where it was literally raining so hard that I couldn't see the ball across the field. To me there is not much better than soccer & rain. They make the perfect combo in my book!

  5. So sorry I'm behind on you posts!!!! :( I will try to keep up better!
Great job getting out there and pushing through! I actually ran my entire half marathon today in the rain! I was absolutely soaked after, but it honestly kept me cool while running. It's one of those things where it's bad after and it seems like a bad idea before, but once you get into it, it's actually kind of refreshing! You definitely earned some major bragging rights - not too many people can claim they ran in a hurricane! :)

  6. That is so cool! Running in the rain is my favorite - altough not a downpour, just a drizzle!

  7. Wow that is intense!! You've got to be so dedicated to run in a friggin hurricane! Way to go girl! I don't have any weather related/exercise stories to share but I've done other types of crazy things. The summer before my sophomore year in college my sister was dating this guy who wanted us to meet his friends. We all planned to go to this park for a picnic (it was at the end of the summer). I decided to wear a sexy witch costume (it wasn't revealing, it was just a little form fitting) that looked more like a beer garden girl outfit that was candy corn themed (since it was black, yellow, orange, and white). There were little kids practicing football at the park and I got a lot of weird looks from parents. Nevertheless, NO ONE forgot me after that night!

  8. I ran yesterday in ridiculous down pours, HUGE trees falling on down, and power outages all over the place. IT was WONDERFUL! I was a bit tired so I kept it at 5miles..but man I love running in the rain!! I know everyone driving in their cars looked at me like I was crazy. HAHA. Awesome job on this run!

    1. It was so much fun! I love that my coach took some pictures of us, but I think I'll have to teach him how to properly hold a camera!

  17. Haha. That's crazy! At least the last picture from your coach turned out non-blurry (my mom and dad... and brother for that matter, have not mastered the "Let's take a picture of Madison in front of said future awesome monument/building/awesomeness without shaking our hand").

I'm not sure what I've done that was crazy. Almost literally freeze my fingers off during an insanely cold marching band performance at a football game? Really, the temperatures were in the 20s or something.

    1. I'll have to give him props for the last one. You should've seen the 50 other blurry ones he took! Someone needs some photography lessons! My dad is a pro at taking pictures. My mom on the other hand? I'm lucky if I'm even IN the picture when she takes it!

  18. That sounds crazy! And awesome! But mostly crazy...I think I would choose to not run over running in the rain... but who knows maybe I'll give it a try someday!
