Why Going To Sleep Early Isn't Just For Grandmas!

Monday, March 24, 2014

There's my lame attempt at rhyming and making sleep seem cool.

I'm 17, but my friends always tell me that I'm actually a 71 year old trapped in the body of a 17 year old. Why do they tell me this? Because I usually go to bed at *gasp* 9:30. Yeah, I know, most nights I'm in bed before your average grandma, but I know that I'm grumpy and unbearable running on under 8 hours of sleep. (Aren't we all?)

My friends can laugh all they want, but sleeping is one of the most important things you'll do all day (or night for that matter)! Seriously. Lately I've seen a ton of new articles discussing how sleep is way more important than we ever could have imagined. So, if you needed a reason to get cozy in your blankets and get a little extra shut eye tonight, keep reading.

you should go to bed early because:

People who sleep 8 hours a night have a longer life expectancy.
Not sleeping for 16 hours leads to a decrease in performance equivalent to having a blood alcohol level         of .05% (Being sleepy = being drunk. Crazyyyy!)
Sleep is just as important as diet and exercise.
 Sleeping enhances memories.
Sleeping prevents diseases and helps build immunity.
Sleeping affects your bodies metabolism, which can lead to weight gain.
A lack of sleep increases hunger by 25 percent.
You get better grades when you're well rested. (and we all could use better grades, right?)
You're more likely to become depressed if you regularly don't get enough sleep.
If you're not sleeping, you'll want to skip that morning run.
You'll lower your stress levels and increase performance in general.

So, if you've read all these facts and still aren't feeling the whole 'go to bed early' thing, just try it out. Because seriously, if you aren't a fan of sleep, I think it's time to rethink. And remember:

sleep isn't for the weak, it's for the strong!

  10. Strange thing is that Stephanie always is in bed at 9:30 too - she did throughout high school and college and still does today. So, you and your cousin have that in common.
