It's Okay To Be Imperfect!

Tuesday, May 06, 2014

Instead of the usual nice blogging intro, I'm cutting right to the chase:

New York recently became the first city to really look into the issue of girls' self-esteem and body image. The results from these studies showed that girls as young as 6 and 7 are struggling with body image and self-esteem. (over 80% of 10-year-old girls are afraid of being fat and by middle school, 40-70% of girls are dissatisfied with two or more parts of their body). How is it possible that children are already dissatisfied with their bodies?

I've already written about body image here, but it's worth a second mention. There are many great things about our world, but our unrealistic idea that perfection is attainable is not one of them.

We're constantly fed so many false ideas about body image through the media.

'How to Get Thin Fast!' 'Get the Perfect Hair!' 'Professional Makeup Tips that Cover Any Flaws!' I'm sure you've seen something similar to those 3 phrases within the past few days on the cover of a magazine or online. (If not, consider yourself lucky.)

Instead of listening to those silly magazines, listen to Raven:

From a completely philosophical point of view, we only have one life, why do we spend so much of it hating ourselves? Because let's face it, no matter what you do (surgery included), you are stuck with yourself for the rest of your life. This can either be a frightening or exhilarating idea.

So, why are we so afraid of being imperfect or *God forbid* fat? Why are all these young girls hating themselves before they've even finished growing? Why is it okay to say 'I hate my thighs' or 'I hate this body part' in everyday conversation? Why do 42% of first graders want to be thinner?

After asking 'Why?' to myself for days (yes, I've been writing this post for a while now!), I started to ask myself 'How?' How do we change the 'problem that's in our heads'?

 Know that you are enough.
 Focus on you, not others.
Think of one thing you like about yourself a day. Contrary to popular belief, it's more than okay to like something about yourself.
Focus on your accomplishments, not your appearance.
Treat your body like a temple- it deserves the best.
She might be beautiful, but that doesn't mean that you aren't.
Every single thing in this world has beauty, including you, just not everyone sees it.

Embrace you body, nourish your soul, feed your mind, love yourself. You are far more than enough, and you are worthy of your own love, flaws and all.

Because as Lorde says, "Flaws are ok :-)".

You're beautiful, you have the whole world on your doorstep, you have the opportunity to have an amazing day. Go love yourself, and instead of dwelling on your flaws and having a negative body image, eat more avocados. They fill the cracks of the soul, and they won't judge you or fill your head with negative thoughts :)

  2. Okay, you are my favorite person at the moment. :) This post is so, so amazing! You are so wise beyond your years, and this is such an important message that needs to get across!

What are "flaws," anyway? Aren't they just a part of life? Who decides what is a flaw, and what's perfection? That's what I wanna know. It makes me so sad what society leads us to believe is "beautiful." I mean what an empty word! We're all human, we all make mistakes, and we're all freaking perfect and unique in our own ways. That's life.

Oookkaaayyy rant over. Sorry, girl. You are amazing!
