Are We Out Of The Woods Yet? // Sam Houston National Forest

Saturday, April 18, 2015

My school has Spring Break like a year after everyone else.

I'm not even kidding. It's so late in the year, that it's basically a pre-summer break. Ill timing aside, any break from school is always welcome. Even when this break involves getting lost in Nowhere, Texas while my mom tries to read a map that's upside down.

My brother lives in College Station, Texas, and if you've ever been there, you know that it's a great place to visit...until you've exhausted everything there is to do there, which from experience, can take less than a week.

That being said, we all squeezed into my mom's car and decided to go somewhere. In all honesty, we really had no clue where we were going. We decided that nice trees are always a good idea, so my dad drove us to Sam Houston National Forest.

An hour of good music and road trip snacking later, we were greeted by a porch swing, tall trees and a huge statue of Sam Houston. Needless to say, our little vacation from vacation was off to a stellar start.

The statue is all fun and games, but the hiking trails are where it gets seriously fun. (Is seriously fun an oxymoron or paradox or even possible for that matter?)

We decided to hike the Lone Star Trail. Clearly the trail name game in Texas is fairly sub par.

A brief summary of our hike would include me singing "Out of the Woods" by Taylor Swift obnoxiously loud, lots of random picture stops, my mom being a tree-hugging hippie, my brother talking anything and everything sports and my dad trailblazing like it's his job.

And what would a hike in 2015 be without a selfie in the woods? All jokes aside, this took some seriously finagling seeing as I carefully balanced my camera on this really shaky tree branch just to get this picture. On a side note, if you have any clue what my mom's doing with her hands, please let me know. :-)

"I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees."
