How To: Survive Living in a Dorm

Friday, September 18, 2015

1. Personalize yo crib.

You might not think of your dorm as home, but it's never going to feel remotely anything like a home if you leave everything empty and undecorated. Make it yours. You don't have to go as all out as I did, but then again I've always been a try hard.

2. Try to keep your study space clean.

My head's always a mess, so it's nice to have one place that's somewhat organized.

3. Keep snacks in your dorm.

Your snacks are probably healthier than anything they sell around college, and they're probably way cheaper. Also, if you're studying late at night, you're not going to want to leave the room if you get hungry. Cabinet full of snacks? Problem solved.

4. Write it down aka have a calendar somewhere in your dorm.

You won't remember when everything's due. Even if you're really good with the whole memorization thing, you're bound to slip up. Also, it feels so satisfying to cross something off your calendar.

5. Fill your closet with comfortable shoes, and wear them.

Cute sandals are all fun and games until you actually have to walk somewhere. (And wear your shoes when you're walking in the hallways etc. The floors are really nasty, so be nice to your feet and don't do the barefoot thing.)

6. Write down your class schedule somewhere, and hang it up where you can see it.

True story: I was going to meet up with one of  my friends this week for dinner, and as we were walking to get food, she remembered she had class. So yeah, it's always good to have them written down so you can double check if you're actually free to go to dinner.

7.  Stay calm.

I could go on for hours about how you shouldn't slam your door or keep the overhead light on when your roommate is sleeping, but it happens. Your neighbors are going to be loud some nights. Your bed won't compare to the bed you slept on at home. Sometimes you just have to step back and realize that dorm life isn't perfect, but it can be pretty good.

  1. Make you space as comfy as possible! Yea, keep it clean so you don't feel claustrophobic in such a small space, but make it you, make it a place to feel safe to come back to!

  2. I love your room! Your snack cabinet looks super yummy. Boxed water, whaaaa?

And I agree 100% about the comfy shoes. You do SO much walking that there a necessity! I've been able to find several pairs of cute, comfy sandals that aren't totally thin and flat that are really great for walking around campus. Yeah for being nice to your feet!
