Read This Before You Watch The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Tuesday, December 08, 2015

Dear you,

Before you turn on your TV to watch gorgeous models walk down a runway, let's get a few things straight. The women you're about to see are beautiful. They are hard-working and fit and accomplished. Their makeup will be perfectly done, and their legs will go on for miles. They are talented and seemingly flawless. But just because these models are pretty, talented, and accomplished doesn't mean that you're ugly, untalented, and unaccomplished.

Admire the beauty of these models without questioning your own.

It's okay to feel a little jealous of Gigi Hadid's long hair. It's okay to want Martha Hunt's abs. It's okay to wish you had Candice's legs. But please don't turn off your TV at the end of the show feeling jealous. Please don't turn off the TV feeling like you are not worthy of love and respect just because you don't look like a Victoria's Secret model. Please don't leave wanting to starve yourself skinny. Please don't start wishing you were anybody but who you are.

Comparing is a dangerous game. Don't let this fashion show make your forget your own self worth. Don't let it forget your own beauty and intelligence and talents. Admire these women without forgetting that you too are worthy of respect and admiration and love. Even if you're not walking down the runway tonight.

There's so much more to these models than fit bodies and million dollar bras. And there's so much more to you than you'll ever believe or notice.

So enjoy the show. Dance along to the music. Eat a bowl of fruit or a bag of chips. But don't forget that you are just as beautiful and loved as those models walking down the runway. Even when it doesn't feel like it, and even when no one seems to notice.

Love,
Katherine
