To The People Always Searching For The Next Best Thing

The yearning started in high school. You're tired of living at home and ready to be independent. The world is a big place full of endless opportunities, and you've been stuck in the same city the last 4 years, dreaming of your escape. Four years of high school has felt like a lifetime. Or so it seems.

Suddenly you were taking your last final exam and walking across a stage to receive your diploma. You were driving away from your parents, everything you'd ever known in the rear-view mirror. You lived on your own now and could call your own shots. It's what you've been waiting for since 9th grade year. Or is it?

The new city you live in is full of life, but there's still homework to be done and tests to be studied for. You're living your dream, but you can't help but think of Christmas break or summertime or the next best thing to come. Suddenly your dorm room seems too small, and the work seems overwhelming. You can't wait to travel with your friends this spring break and move into your first apartment this summer. You can't wait for your life to begin.

Suddenly life isn't life. It's not something worth living. It's an endless search for the next best thing.

I think it's a natural tendency to yearn the next best thing. It's easy to convince yourself that everything will get better once you  ____. Life will be perfect if ____. You'll be happy if _____. It is important to set goals and work towards your dreams, but it's also important to train yourself to be content with where you are at this very moment.

It's okay to want better for yourself. It's okay to want to improve your life, but don't spend your entire existence wishing away the present. Don't waste away each precious moment of your life searching for something better. Don't wake up one day when you're old and gray and realize that you took some of the best moments of your life for granted because you're were constantly looking for something more. Something better.

Stop waiting for Friday or the weekend or the "next best thing". Stop waiting for "your life to begin". It's begun. It's happening. Don't let it pass you by.

Look forward to the future and all of the great things to come, but don't forget about all the stuff in between. Stop worrying about missing out on something or second guessing your decisions. Think about it, some of the best days of your life haven't happened yet. There's incredible things in store for you, but there's also incredible things happening right now.

There's joy to be found on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons, so don't let your search for futuristic happiness prevent you from finding the happiness that's right in front of you, right this very minute. Because you deserve to experience it.
